Welcome Back to Hebrew School!

School Schedule, beginning September 8th, 2009

Tuesdays and Thursdays                        4:00-6:00 at Sinai Academy (including snack)

                                      K-7th graders

Period One: (both days)   Hebrew Language Skills including reading, conversation, mastery of basic sentence structure, cursive (beginning in 2nd level), using fun ways to grasp and recall new vocabulary and language concepts.  Students are grouped in 4  levels according to Hebrew reading level (not age or grade).  Last 10 minutes: all levels assemble for fun Jewish trivia or holiday study.

Period Two Tuesdays

K-2nd graders meet with Darlene Weeks to enrich their language studies with deeper understanding of Jewish values, Jewish holidays and have hands-on creative projects to explain when they come home.

3-5th graders meet with Susan Federspiel to journey through the families of Genesis, their issues and what can be learned from their strengths and weaknesses.  They will explore from Adam to Joseph and conclude the year with a unit on a unique aspect of Israel.  They also will deepen their understanding of the Jewish holiday cycles and experience hands on projects.

6th and 7th graders meet with Rabbi Josh Breindel (of Temple Anshe Amunim)   to explore the Jewish American experience since the 1880’s in a course entitled:  “Adventures in the New World”—we hail this dynamic addition to our faculty!

Period Two on Thursdays

3-7th graders will enjoy the popular Arts and Culture track when               various community artists bring their media to the Jewish experience.

The students not only learn the new media, they learn how to express their Jewish values and hearts through them.  Examples are: music, poetry, fabric arts with Crispina ffrench  who teaches us about giving to others by creating from recycled materials, and some new faculty surprises.

Shabbat downstairs at Knesset Israel

K-2nd grade: From 10:00 am - noon in the nursery classroom

Darlene Weeks shares a wealth of experience inspiring the children’s modified  Shabbat service, Shabbat games, stories, songs, play-time, Kiddush, and of course, appropriate Shabbat crafts.

3rd-7th grade:  Liat Lazarovich and Myrna Hammerling

10:00-10:45         Torah Portion of the Week

                        11:00-noon          Junior Congregation

Every week new lessons are derived from our Torah, a document several thousands of years old. It’s amazing! After Kiddush, the students volunteer to lead different parts of the service.  Students rotate chanting Torah throughout the school year.  The Honorable Menschen program rewards those who participate regularly with a special gift at the               Education Shabbat, the first Shabbat in May.

The K.I. Teen Program

8th grade – 12th grade

Tuesdays from 5:00-7:00 pm

in the K.I. library

Course #1

Liat Lazarovich gets everyone talking in Hebrew at his or her own level of expertise.  In addition to Modern Hebrew study, a great help to those who hope to get to Israel in the near future, Liat has developed a curriculum using films to trigger discussions of significant Jewish values.  These will be interspersed every 3 weeks or so between the Hebrew conversation lessons.

5:55-6:05 pm

Noshing and Schmoozing

Course #2

The Jewish Law Review with Rabbi David Weiner

Rachel borrowed Jennifer’s bicycle but forgot she had ridden it to school and left it parked overnight outside the gym. Overnight there was a wind and rainstorm that caused a tree limb to fall on the bike. Not wanting to offend Jennifer, Rachel asked her mother to take the bicycle to the repair shop. There, the mechanic tried to fix the frame of the bicycle, but the brand new power tool he had just purchased from Stan’s Machine Shop malfunctioned, and the brakes were ruined. Meanwhile, Jennifer stopped into the repair shop to purchase a new helmet and recognized her bike...

  • Who is responsible?
  • Who is right? Who is wrong?
  • Who needs to pay what to whom?

Scenarios like this test the limits of law and are wonderful ways to explore ethics and values. Together, through study of cases in Jewish law, we will take an exciting journey through the intricacies of right and wrong, responsibility and community.
