Hebrew School Registration 2018-19
Dear Knesset Israel Families,
Thank you for sending your child(ren) to the Knesset Israel Hebrew School and the Wednesday afternoon CHAI program, a partnership in Jewish education serving central Berkshire County. Last year we saw a great deal of growth and learning in every classroom and we look forward to the 5779/2018-19 school year, when we will have the opportunity to build on our successes and improve upon last year’s program.
Our curriculum intends to prepare our students for Jewish lives imbued with meaning, knowledge and ruach (spirit). A detailed schedule and description of what to expect at each grade level appears in the handbook. Our Shabbat program builds on successes from the last few years, such as music and Soul classes, and introduces new elements to our primary school classrooms.
With so many changes afoot, we took the opportunity to reboot the CHAI program. Students will enjoy making progress in their Hebrew studies through the learner-centered Mitkadem curriculum – more information will follow as our teachers receive training. Programming in singing and music, facilitated by Rabbi Liz Hirsch, and art classes with Brandi Dahari will deepen students’ Jewish connections.
We are introducing a series of Family Education programs to CHAI – each one includes time to learn and/or experience an aspect of Jewish living, as well as dinner. See the calendar for the dates.
Classes this year (with a couple of exceptions) meet at Knesset Israel.
We are proud of our Hebrew School offerings and very grateful for all the community support that makes our program possible. It costs approximately $1300 per student to provide our program. We are grateful to the many community members who share their time and expertise to facilitate our classes and provide comprehensive and wonderful educational opportunities for our students. Thank you to the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires for their commitment and generous support and subsidizing of all of our students’ tuition. The Jewish Federation welcomes contributions in general from Hebrew School families – contributing to the annual campaign in any amount shows appreciation for the work of the organization. Thank you to Knesset Israel for underwriting our Hebrew School program through the programming of the Berkshire Jewish Film Festival. And thank you to all of you for your dedication and for sending your children to participate in our Jewish community here at KI.
Tuition Charges – new procedure
This year we are not asking for a deposit at registration. Instead we will be billing each household directly through its Knesset Israel account. We will set due dates for payments according to the following schedule:
- 1/3 by September 1
- 1/3 by November 1
- 1/3 (balance due) by January 1, 2019.
Tuition - Knesset Israel Members
- Shabbat Early Childhood Program (Shabbat only)- $250
- Grades K-1 (Shabbat only) - $500
- Grades 2-7 (Wed & Shabbat) - $860
- Bar/bat mitzvah fee - $600 (in addition to tuition)
- KI Hebrew High (Shabbat and other courses) - $270
Nonmembers of Knesset Israel pay an additional $200 per student per year. This may be applied towards membership dues.
We can be flexible, so please contact me if a different payment schedule would be preferable. KI is committed to Jewish education, and no student is ever turned away due to financial hardship. Please register and then contact me to receive a financial aid application.
When you pay your tuition bill through your account, you will see that Knesset Israel now offers ACH/EFT (‘direct debit’) as a more efficient payment option. You may still use a credit card to pay your balance; however, if you do so, 2.75% will be added to your payment to cover processing fees. No fees will be added to ACH/EFT or check payments.
We welcome questions or comments about our program by phone or by email. Please see the last page of the handbook for contact information for myself, Rabbi David Weiner, and/or Rabbi Liz Hirsch.
We are looking forward to greeting everyone at our Labor Day Family Field Day barbecue (Monday, September 3, 3-7pm) and Rosh Hashanah.
Enjoy the summer,
